Known for her abstract fine-art practice, Sabine composes sheepskin rugs with the same instinct she brings to painting: tone, texture, movement, contrast, asymmetry, and light.
Finding beauty in the wild, natural world, Sabine translates the beauty indoors, creating abstract paintings and sculptural wool pieces that shift the atmosphere of a room.

Born from sheep, land, material, and memory
Sabine’s relationship with wool began long before creating her first rug. As a child in Belgium, she spent time on her aunt and uncle’s sheep farm, caring for the lambs and earning the gentle respect of animals. This deep connection is carried throughout her artwork.
Years later, after spending decades establishing her abstract fine-art practice in Belgium, Sabine began working with sheepskin as a new artistic medium. As an artist who grew up alongside sheep, creating handcrafted sheepskin rugs using materials sourced directly from farmers was a natural next step.
What started as a material connection became a world of its own: free-form sheepskin rugs shaped by nature, memory, and her artist’s eye.
Many of the pieces in her current collection are named for the sheep her uncle once cared for, running a thread of affection and personal history through her works.
Composed by the eye of an artist
Sabine’s process for creating Wol Society sheepskin rugs is deeply organic. She selects each hide for its unique character, studying and arranging the composition until it has the right sculptural presence. Following her fine artist’s instincts, Sabine revisits and refines the composition until nothing feels out of place.
Each completed rug is a unique soft sculpture, crafted in Belgium and created to bring warmth, natural character, and timeless luxury to extraordinary interiors.
About Serge, Atelier Director & Right Hand to Sabine Maes
After years spent working as an artist, Sabine knew she needed a new assistant, particularly someone to help expand her business. Serge, her friend of 20+ years, had just sold his businesses and was ready for a new artistic challenge.
He volunteered himself, and with his professional experience in luxury interiors and retail, and a lifelong personal passion for art and design, it was a natural fit. Today, Serge’s contributions touch every part of the process that allows Sabine’s tactile, soft sculpture floor coverings to come to fruition.
From helping coordinate projects to supporting communication & organizing practical matters, Serge creates the space for Sabine to focus on her work.
