H1 | Meet Sabine Maes
H2 Welcome to the Wol Society*
H3 The Wol Society* is the sheepskin rug studio of Belgian artist Sabine Maes.
Known for her abstract fine-art practice, Sabine composes sheepskin rugs with the same instinct she brings to painting: tone, texture, movement, contrast, asymmetry, and light.
Each rug is crafted from exceptional European sheepskin and created for designers and collectors who believe atmosphere is everything.
H2 Born from sheep, land, material, and memory.
P2 Sabine’s relationship with wool began long before her first rug.
As a child in Belgium, she spent time at her aunt and uncle’s home, where more than 200 sheep were part of everyday life. She helped care for lambs, earned the gentle respect of animals, and carried that connection with her into her art.
Years later, after decades of painting and creating, Sabine began working with sheepskin as a new artistic medium.
Many pieces are named after the sheep her uncle once cared for, giving each rug a small thread of place, affection, and personal history.
What started as a material connection became a world of its own: free-form sheepskin rugs shaped by nature, memory, and her artist’s eye.
H2 Composed by the eye of an artist.
P2 Sabine doesn’t design from a template, or pattern. Instead, she selects each skin for its unique character then arranges, moves, studies, and refines the composition until it has the perfect presence.
Her process is instinctive and painterly, guided by color, tone, texture, asymmetry, balance, and light.
Each finished rug is a unique sheepskin composition, crafted in Belgium and created to bring warmth, natural character, and atmosphere into extraordinary interiors.
